The Richmond People’s Budget launched its inaugural idea collection stage with a mission to empower the voices of our residents and shape the future of our city. From September through November, we embarked on a journey to gather community-driven ideas for projects that will use $3 million in funding to enhance neighborhoods and build a stronger, more connected Richmond. This first cycle was a testament to the energy, creativity, and diversity that make Richmond unique.
To make this process as inclusive and accessible as possible, the Richmond People’s Budget Steering Commission and Team deployed a multi-faceted approach to reach all corners of the city. Idea collection boxes were placed in every public library across Richmond, ensuring that residents had a convenient way to share their thoughts. By popular demand, additional boxes were stationed at key community locations, amplifying opportunities for participation.
Recognizing that community engagement thrives on personal connections, the People’s Budget went on the road. We engaged with residents face-to-face at various community events, sparking conversations about what improvements they’d like to see in their neighborhoods. Every weekend, we hosted idea collection tables at two of Richmond’s most vibrant markets—the Big RVA Market and the South of the James Market. These markets provided an ideal setting to connect with diverse groups of residents in an atmosphere of collaboration and creativity.
Throughout this stage, the Richmond People’s Budget team worked tirelessly to ensure the process was inclusive, representative, and reflective of our city’s aspirations. Whether it was speaking with longtime Richmonders about the changes they’ve always wanted to see or sparking fresh ideas with first-time participants, each interaction reinforced the importance of community-led decision-making.
The production of this idea collection stage was made possible by the dedication of the Richmond Participatory Budgeting Steering Commission and People’s Budget team. Thank you to everyone who contributed their ideas, supported our outreach efforts, and believed in the power of participatory budgeting.
